WHY I BOUGHT THIS BOOK: When there is something wrong with me, I get the best advice. A four year bio-medical science degree in nursing and work in advanced management consulting underscores this quest for the finest information. My strategy came into high use when, at 47, I entered what became a perimenopausal transition from hell.

CHIEF COMPLAINT: Eights weeks ago and two years post-menopausal, I encountered severe painful ongoing gastro-intestinal dysfunction and near failure. Coupled with this gastric upset was my usual (but more intense this fall) ragweed and leaf mould allergies/rhinitis. I immediately sent for '4 Weeks to Healthy Digestion'(2009)by Harvard's Dr. Greenberger, a professor of gastroenterology, now in his 51st year of practice. (Harvard's the best, right?)

WAS THIS BOOK HELPFUL?: Greenberger's book created mostly questions. FIRST, about the co-author, no information is given. In the Library of Congress fine print her 1952 date of birth and... Read more

There is really nothing in this book that isn't already widely available for free through other sources. Basically, it's a book for novices, especially those who are ignorant of health and nutrition and eat the typical high fat, high sugar, industrial nonfoods that make up much of the American diet. But long-time sufferers of any of the conditions addressed in this book have probably already done their research and tried multiple strategies, including those suggested here. Save your money.

I bought this book for my wife and she likes it.

When it comes to medical, I prefer a book that is by a medical doctor as opposed to a book that is merely opinion or self taught. This book being written by a Harvard Doctor was the selling point for me.

However, If one has severe or a long history of symptoms, I would see a doctor before doing what any book says. I am a firm believer in not only good doctors, but in more than one doctor's recommendation when necessary.

Conclusion: This book can be useful in identifying which foods may be causing a minor digestive problem. However, again, no book is a substitute for good medical attention and advice.

This is my first review but I had to write one because this book is fantastic! I have made five recipes in the past five days and my 5 year old son (with severe ulcerative colitis) has loved every single one (the rest of the family has loved the food too)! I own every SCD cookbook and this one seems to have the most recipes that are winners. So far, we have made: a chinese chicken dish (actually tastes like chinese chicken but without soy sauce- amazing); vietnamese pork (same); almond puff (tastes like cake!); chili-lime crackers (tastes like mild cheez-its!); and shortbread (buttery and tasty). We are going to keep trying recipes but love this cookbook and wanted to post this review while ordering another copy for my son's grandmom. Well worth adding to your library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book but go easy on the almond flour, December 24, 2010

First off, I must say this is a great cookbook. Excellent recipes meticulously laid out. I don't follow an SCD diet, but am grain-free, so I really enjoy some of Raman Prasad's grain-free variations. I was a but disappointed, though, to see how he pulls off the desserts and "breaded" fish and meats. He uses almond flour in lieu of conventional flour and honey in lieu of sugar.

Here's the thing with almond flour. It's loaded with omega-6 fatty acids, which need to be balanced with omega-3 for a healthy dietary balance.

Plus, baking with it leads to oxidisation of the Omega-6 fats in the nut.

Coconut flour or a combination of coconut and almond flours are better choices.

If you cook with almond flour or consume a lot of almonds, remember to take an Omega 3 (fish oil or flax oil) supplement.

That said, I would still highly recommend this book. The recipes are easy enough to whip up on a weeknight and absolutely delicious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yummy New SCD Cookbook, February 28, 2008
Amy McKenna (Ann Arbor, MI USA) - See all my reviews
      (REAL NAME)
I have a new favorite cookbook! It's "Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet" by Raman Prasad. Although the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) includes lots of great food choices, it doesn't allow for dining at my favorite Asian and Indian restaurants. Raman's culturally diverse recipes are bursting with the flavors of the ethnic cuisines I've been missing. One of my favorites so far is Kung Pao Chicken, which is wonderfully flavored with Raman's SCD Asian Sauce (hurray for a yummy soy sauce substitute!). And in my opinion the Beef Vindaloo rivals some of the best Indian restaurants in our town. I love, love, love this cookbook's mouthwatering photography; the compelling foreword and introduction to the diet; and the personal touch of Raman's stories about food, family, and friends. I highly recommend this great cookbook for anyone who wants to add some pizzaz to their SCD fare.

If "The Complete Idiot's Guide" sounds frivolous to you, keep reading. My granddaughter at the ripe old age of 5 has a severe lactose intolerance. She also has a mom and grandmother who are both excellent cooks. The cooks have given this book nothing but rave reviews. They both use the book so much that I bought them each a copy. If you are looking for just one cook book to truly protect someone with a lactose problem and at the same time provide an amazingly complete array of delicious and attractive recipes (that are great for the whole family, not just the allergic person), I'd say this is the one. We have a library of cook books that fills one wall of shelves. About a dozen books of those books are about lactose intolerance and food allergies, but this one by far gets the most use.

To be honest, I was disappointed that so many of the recipes include soy creamer. I try to stay away from soy products as much as possible for health reasons. I know of no subsitute for this product so I feel that I can't use any of the recipes that include it as an ingredient. If you tolerate soy products though, I believe you will enjoy it.
